[ WEAR ] ONE

[ WEAR ] ONE is a formal jumpsuit for social events, accommodating for wheelchair and self-care factors.

Meet our client, Marci.

Marci is a woman who is a wheelchair user. She is looking for formal wear to attend special events.

We learned about Marci.

“ I want to look hot!”

Marci had a difficult time finding formal wear that met her personal style and health related needs. Through formal and informal assessments, observation of her self-care routines, and client interviews, we learned about Marci’s personal, physical, psychological, environmental, occupational, and performance factors.

We processed our data and determined design requirements.

We established four primary design requirements that supported her personal style and health:

  1. Access points - Accessing self care from Marci’s wheelchair was a necessity.

  2. Aesthetics - Marci did not like dresses and stated, “I just want to wear pants!”

  3. Wheelchair - clothing that did not bunch up in her wheelchair was important for comfort, to maintain condition of her clothing, and to look presentable.

  4. Fabric - comfortable, breathable fabrics that looked elegant and did not put Marci at risk for skin breakdown.

We started prototyping.

We created six prototypes of a top that Marci selected through low fidelity prototyping (small, paper prototypes) and one full sized prototype. This helped us save time and fabric.

We prototyped access points.

We considered several options for Marci to access her self-care routine through design of her pants.

We tested our prototypes

Through research, user testing, and interviews, we streamlined our prototype to work functionally and aesthetically for our client.

We tested her putting on and removing her garment in her typical environment (home) with her usual supports (home health aide) to ensure that the garment would be successfully used by Marci.

Marci’s garment is finished! She wears her jumpsuit to a family event.
